Setup and Interface
Like most modern security suites, Avast! Premier installs in less than five minutes and does not require a system restart. As with McAfee's LiveSafe suite, Avast! performs a system scan as soon as it is installed to ensure your PC is clean right off the bat. We were also happy to see that the program includes a brief tutorial outlining the software's basic functions, plus tips to get users acclimated to the program.
Avast!'s interface is clean and easy to follow. Up front is the program's Status screen, which provides a notification panel that tells you when your system is clean or at risk. Below the notification area is a shortcut dock with three customizable boxes that link to the software's Quick Scan, Browser Cleanup and Free Mobile Security.
A fourth empty box is there for you to add a link of your choosing. To change a shortcut, right-click the appropriate box and select Change Shortcut. You'll then be provided with a list of all of the suite's available features, which you can add to the home screen's dock. On the left side of the screen are a series of links to Avast!'s main features, including Status, Scan, Tools, Store, My Devices, Help, Statistics and Settings.
Features and Tools
Avast! Premier's features include its Software Updater, Sandbox, Browser Cleanup, AccessAnywhere, Rescue Disk and Firewall. As its name implies, Software Updater checks your PC for outdated programs and lets you update them within the Avast! program. This helps keep your computer safe from holes in other programs' security.
Sandbox lets you run an unknown or untrustworthy program in an isolated environment that keeps it from harming your computer. We particularly liked Avast!'s Browser Cleanup feature, which lets you easily clean your Web browser of any add-ons or toolbars that have poor reputations.
The AccessAnywhere tool lets you connect any computer to your PC via a secure link, while RescueDisk helps you create a bootable CD or USB drive for performing offline virus and malware scans. This is particularly useful for users who have heavily infected systems. The Firewall feature lets you control Avast!'s firewall settings.
Security Performance
To test Avast! Premier's security prowess, we turned to independent security firm AV-TEST. Though the company hasn't tested Avast! Premier, it did test Avast Free Antivirus, which runs the same protection engine. In guarding against zero-day malware attacks from the Web and email, Avast! caught 89 percent of 110 sample threats. That's significantly lower than the industry average of 94 percent. McAfee LiveSafe recognized 98 percent of the sample threats, while Kaspersky Internet Security, Bitdefender Total Security and Norton 360 found 100 percent of the threats.
Avast!, however, performed better in detecting widespread and prevalent malware found in the previous four weeks, recognizing 98 percent of 19,604 samples. That's better than the industry average of 96 percent. Still, it's just behind Kaspersky Internet Security, Bitdefender Total Security, McAfee LiveSafe and Norton 360's 100-percent detection rate.
System Impact
Avast! Premier doesn't do much to reduce its impact on your PC's overall performance. Suites such as Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 and Bitdefender Total Security offer features that cut back on their own system-resources consumption while the user is playing games or using full-screen programs.
In the same situations, Avast! Premier simply disables pop-up notifications. That's helpful, but not nearly as useful for gamers as are Kaspersky's and Bitdefender's solutions.
To determine what kind of impact Avast! Premier has on a PC, we installed it on an Acer Aspire E1-470P laptop equipped with an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD. We then ran a series of simultaneous system scans and benchmark tests.
For our first test, we ran the PCMark7 benchmark to get a base score, which was 2,123. We then ran the benchmark at the same time as a quick scan, which caused the notebook's score to drop to 1,716.
When we ran a full scan, the laptop's score fell even lower, to 1,658. That's just below the 1,663 turned in by Norton 360. Both scores are better than the 1,478 and 1,393 our notebook scored during full scans with Bitdefender Total Security and Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, respectively.
It took our test machine 9 minutes and 3 seconds to run our OpenOffice benchmark, which tests a PC's CPU by matching 20,000 names with their addresses. With a quick scan running, the test took 9:32 to finish. When we ran the test and a full scan at the same time, OpenOffice completed in 9:19. That's a tick faster than it took for the test to complete while running a full scan with Bitdefender. It took 12:47 to complete the test while running a full scan with Kaspersky and it took 13:16 with McAfee LiveSafe.
Privacy
Avast! Premier's SafeZone tool lets you safely shop and bank online within a secure virtualized desktop that helps prevent nefarious individuals from stealing your data. You can choose to have SafeZone launch automatically whenever you navigate to a particular site by adding the URL to the SafeZone tool, or you can open SafeZone directly from the Avast! menu.
The software's Data Shredder lets you permanently delete a file, folder or entire hard drive partition by clearing the data, then writing over it so it can't be recovered. To shred something, you simply navigate to the Data Shredder tool and search the directory for the file or folder you want to delete.
If you're looking for some serious privacy, the SecureLine feature gives you a quick and easy way to set up a secure VPN that anonymizes your Internet connection. When connected to the Internet via SecureLine, snoopers will be unable to identify your PC's IP address, making it more difficult for them to break into your machine.
The feature is particularly useful when connected to a public Wi-Fi hotspot. Unfortunately, SecureLine requires a separate fee to use. Prices range from $7.99 for one month to $59.99 for 12 months or $89.99 for 24 months.
What's missing from Avast!'s portfolio of tools and features? Parental controls. Unlike Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 or McAfee LiveSafe, you can't block Web access for your kids or use the software to keep them from playing inappropriate games. That means you'll have to purchase a second program to complete this task.
Mobile Protection
Like many antivirus suites, Avast! Premium offers access to a free mobile security app for Android and iOS users. The Android app, which is the most robust, features antimalware protection, an antitheft component, online backup for your contacts, call and SMS blocking, and Web protecting for the standard Android and Chrome browsers. The app can also, conveniently, identify apps that behave in ways similar to known malicious software.
If you want Avast! Mobile Premium, you can shell out $14.99 per year to get geofencing and an apps lock that prevents access from authorized users. The app will also capture a photo of anyone who tries and fails to unlock your phone three times. It can also identify tracking systems and detect any apps that use ads.
Verdict
Avast! Premier offers a wide array of tools and features that will not only keep your PC safe from viruses, but also help protect your banking information and personal data. Compared to the competition, its protection rate is slightly low when it comes to zero-day attacks, but the software performed above average when protecting against known threats.
